If you've heard about smudging but don't quite know what it means or how to do it, we've dedicated this post to the basics of smudging and included a step-by-step how-to guide. An ancient tradition that originated from Native Americans, smudging is the practice of cleansing and purifying by using certain herbs, including sage. These sacred herbs are then burned, and the resulting smoke is believed to cleanse negative energy and reset energy of a space and also of objects and people.

As Susan Patterson explains, "smudging your home, office, body, and gemstones is like taking an energetic shower, or perhaps even spending a day in the mountains, spending time breathing in the fresh air and scent of pine, which offers a direct positive effect on reducing stress levels." (see link to full article below)

Doesn't that sound necessary?!

So get some matches, light your sage or palo santo, let the smoke burn around your body, your gemstones, your space and inhale deeply.*

Visualize the smoke removing negative energy from your life and home and if you feel comfortable with it, you can also repeat the following incantation:

~ Air, fire, water, earth. Cleanse, dismiss, dispel. ~

*Don't forget to open your windows after! Those negative ions need to be released.

Here are 5 reasons to smudge:

1. It clears negative energy.

With the ability to clear out the negative energy in the air that can weigh us down, smudging can give you an increased sense of happiness, comfort and well-being. Think of it as a natural antidepressant! Disclaimer: Don't forget to open your windows after! Those negative ions need to be released.

2. It improves mental focus.

Having trouble concentrating on an important project? Or just looking to inspire some creativity? Smudging is a great way to reset the space you’re working in providing a clean slate to let the ideas flow!

3. During these difficult times, spiritual rituals are important.

Connecting to something higher than yourself can be a great way to feel connected to the world during challenging times. Especially when things feel so disconnected and out of our control.

4. It can help those suffering with allergies.

Not only does smudging affect the negative energy in your space, it has also been proven to clear the air of harmful bacteria, pollen, dust and even pet dander. Sweet relief!

5. Feeling stressed? Smudging has relaxing effects.

Performing this ritual can have a very calming effect. Smudging is best done slowly and with intention. Think of it as a moving meditation. It’s a great way to get connected with your body and the space around you.
